Our church’s bass guitar was in bad shape. So I decided to make its condition worse. I set it up.

CLEANING
Since it was dusty, I started with cleaning it up.

Removed the strings. Like that.

Lemon oil on the neck.

I removed the neck to clean the dirt accumulated in the neck pocket.

Oh no! The shim came off!

No problem. Elmer’s glue to the rescue!

TRUSS ROD ADJUSTMENT
Before I took out the string, I checked the bowing for a bit. Placed a capo on the first fret and depressed the highest fret (22nd). Then look at the 8th fret area.

Wanting to reduce the relief, I’d have to adjust the truss rod until the neck is slightly upbowed (to compensate for the tension of the thick bass strings).
Like so.

Ta dah!

SADDLE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Now the action was a bit high to my taste like so.

After getting the correct radius, I adjusted the saddle heights to taste.

FINISHING UP
Restrung the guitar.

After giving a final wipe with a clean rag, voila!
